In Cthulhu: Death May Die, inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, you and your fellow players represent investigators in the 1920s who instead of trying to stop the coming of Elder Gods, want to summon those otherworldly beings so that you can put a stop to them permanently. You start the game insane, and while your long-term goal is to shoot Cthulhu in the face, so to speak, at some point during the game you’ll probably fail to mitigate your dice rolls properly and your insanity will cause you to do something terrible — or maybe advantageous. Hard to know for sure.
The game has multiple episodes, and each of them has a similar structure of two acts, those being before and after you summon whatever it is you happen to be summoning. If any character dies prior to the summoning, then the game ends and you lose; once the Elder One is on the board, as long as one of you is still alive, you still have a chance to win.
The episodes are all standalone and not contingent on being played in a certain order or with the same players.
Next, a preview of some of the finalized character Dashboards for Death May Die! Showing Lysa, Annabelle, and Jack’s Dashboards.
First up is Lysa. She carries the goat-like skull of an ancient spirit in her lantern. But don’t let her hear you say that, because Malacoda is definitely not a goat. And of course, that is what her skill would be: Malacoda.
While Lysa is carrying Malacoda, it protects her from harm. Every turn Lysa ends on a safe space, she can make a roll to heal 1 stress or health for each success. At higher levels, Lysa can even rest with an enemy on her space, choose not to lose sanity, and even deal wounds to each enemy within 1 space of her on each success.
Next is Annabelle Laveau. Spirit medium, and all-around badass. You do NOT want to mess with her. Her divination and spirit sensing abilities are portrayed in her skill: Channeling.
Channeling allows Annabelle to store a rolled dice as a “Gift” and add the results with a tentacle to a roll. At higher levels, she can even confer her gift to EVERY roll, to ALL Investigators, regardless of where they are.
Last but not least, Jack Muñoz. Through the graphic novel, you will see him on the steering wheel of his armored truck very often. And it’s his quick thinking, driving abilities, and general recklessness that saves the party from certain peril many times. His skill is Truck Driver.
Anyone who plays Death May Die knows that maneuverability is key. The skill allows Jack to bring more Investigators, cumulative to Swiftness, along with him during a Run. On higher levels, he has free rerolls on attacks, heals stress for every Investigator on his space, and even gains dice for each Investigator on attack rolls.
And there you go, a little teaser of what’s to come! See you in the next update!
A preview of Rocco and Annabelle, from concept to resin. Rocco’s concept art first. The pictures can do the talking.
After sketching and multiple rounds of edits, we reached the final colored artwork.
At the same time, Rocco’s sculpt was created in 3D.
The sculpts were then made into resins and sent to us for rounds of inspection before they’re approved to be made in plastic. Here’s Rocco in plastic, very similar to what we’ll be putting into the final package.
At the same time, we were also working on Annabelle. This was her original concept art, given to the artist to render.
And here is her final scanned colored artwork, and the cleaned up version you will see on your Investigator Board.
Our 3D sculptors took the approved pose. This usually happens during the sketch phase in the interest of time, so while the figure is being sculpted in 3D, the artist works separately on coloring the artwork.
And after we get the resins to inspect, and rounds of edits are done, we get the plastics delivered to us, fresh off the press.
